It is a wireless electronic device that monitors, communicates, or controls other devices by picking up and automatically transmitting a different signal in response. This device can be either active or passive.

Just a quick comparison: Active transponders can continually transmit data using their power source. They are mainly used to monitor, track, or control a device from thousands of miles away.
